Pictured on the right is Mr. Hao Li, G.M., FastCAM Shanghai Co.Ltd. He is at the recent Beijing Essen Welding and Cutting Fair receiving an award from a local trade magazine for FastCAM's support and contributions.

FastCAM conducted a technical seminar on NC cutting technology and staff from the China office manned our busy stand over the 4 days. With many Chinese OEM partners (19 at the show alone), FastCAM is now positioned as number 1 in our market space!

  • Inside FastCAM® - automatic (tool) pathing (a time-saving embedded feature)

The Essen Welding & Cutting Fair has developed into #2 in the world. The location changes between the two major exhibition cities of China – Beijing and Shanghai.

The huge market, competitive quality and price of the welding and cutting equipment in China is attracting ever more manufacturers, sellers and buyers from all over the world. Over 700 Exhibitors from 17 countries participated in 2006.

We have many pictures; however, the main thrust of the show was the latest beveling technology fitted to many machines. The majority of international machines displayed beveling devices and there were many locally built machines as well. Of special note was Bolichang CNC Equipment's display focusing on a beveling contour plasma-cutting machine that adopts a compound 5 axis robotic movement control. This technology allows the optimal production of complex “V” & “K” bevels with ease.

N.B. FastCAM’s latest Weld Preparation interface is poised to take advantage of these emerging machine technologies. Complex Weld preparation data can now be carried right through from drawing to nesting and production in a way that CAD simply cannot.

This article was prompted by a customer who called in wanting to know if there was a way to path 35 identical square holes all at once. With circles, FastCAM® prompts you to do all of them at once, but does not do that with square holes.

A quick walk through on his settings showed that he had FastPATHTM but had never used it! Note: FastPATHTM can be located inside FastNEST®. Under files go to Set Pierce (there is also a shortcut button at the far right hand end of the toolbar which will take you directly to the settings where you define all your cutting conditions for material and thickness).

FastPATHTM saves programming time by automatically determining the best cutting paths based on the settings that you designate. FastPATHTM has artificial intelligence which means it automatically determines the inner-most contours and sets them as the first cutting paths. It also has the uncanny ability to determine which holes to cut first to minimize torch movement. But most importantly, it can determine which type of lead-ins and where to place them on the profile of your parts. Blended entries and exits are added automatically. Complicated parts that used to take upwards of 30 minutes to path out manually only take about 30 seconds when using FastPATHTM . Kerf, cut direction, internals and externals determined. Path complex nests or an entire CAD nest with a single click of your mouse!

For multi-process systems, you can even select the order of processing. FastPATHTM is also able to save your settings for different plate styles. Obviously your lead-ins for 4 inch thick plate are going to be different than 1/4 inch plate. FastPATHTM will allow you to save and restore settings for various styles of plate with just a few mouse clicks.

FastPATHTM is truly the ultimate postprocessor for DXF files and it doesn't require any training!

FastPATHTM is embedded in the FastCAM® Professional Edition however it is also available as an upgrade option to both the Standard and NC Only versions. You can purchase the FastPATHTM module for $695 (without having to pay the full upgrade to the Professional version).

Here is a simple cost justification. With an average time saving of 10 minutes per part, with your programmer earning $10 an hour, after just 70 parts FastPATHTM has paid for itself, even sooner if your programmer makes $20 an hour. It will only take 35 parts for FastPATHTM to have paid for itself which we can average at a week's work. Over a year’s time, it's reasonable to expect to save about $35K in man-hours, not to mention how it speeds operation.

  • cost DXF nests and parts instantly
  • generate NC code instantly
  • connect CAD directly to NC and nesting
  • eliminate all your manual pathing saving hours per week
